How a Samsung Heat Pump System Will Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Energy powers everything that we do in Scotland. From keeping our hospitals and schools running all the way through to letting us have some down time by watching the TV.

Yet, producing energy can come at a cost to the environment. 30% of all greenhouse gas emissions come from energy supply, this then leads to global warming and climate change. The most prevalent greenhouse gas is Carbon Dioxide. This is produced by human practices like burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) in order to produce energy.

There are now plans put in place by the Scottish Government that aim to reduce these emissions. They aim to have 30% of all energy consumption in Scotland to be renewable energy sources by 2020. One of the best ways to contribute is by installing both commercial heat pumps and domestic heat pumps.

Domestic Samsung Air Source Heat Pump Systems

Samsung’s EHS Air Source Heat Pump Systems Mono range is the perfect choice for your home. As the government urges both commercial and domestic properties to cut down on carbon emissions, the Mono range is effective and easy to use.

These are simple heat pump systems that provide both air-to-air and air-to-water heating. They are simpler to install than other models because they do not require hydro units or refrigerant pipes to be installed alongside it. This makes it easier for both us and you!

The Mono range of Samsung Heat Pumps is one of the most convenient models that there is out there to reduce carbon emissions. They are a compact and light unit that makes instillation easy and won’t take up much space outside your home.

All the models in the range come with the option to be controlled through Wi-Fi as well as being able to have hybrid capabilities with either solar and/or boiler technology. Not only are they smarter, but they also are up to 4X more effective than your traditional gas boiler.

Benefits of a Samsung Mono Heat Pump System

There are many advantages of choosing a Samsung Heat Pump system, these include:

  • Outstanding performance in cold weather – will still operate at 90% efficiency at -10 degrees!
  • If the system freezes it will start a defrost operation and still run 39% better than any competitor model
  • Space reduction of up to 50% - this saves space, time and money due to less installation
  • It comes with a sophisticated remote controller – meaning you can control and see everything about your heat pump without ever having to move

Panasonic

Panasonic Heat Pumps

A heat pump simply takes renewable energy from the ground in the form of heat from the ground, or cool air from the outdoors and increases its temperature. This is then heated to the correct temperature for the home and warm air or water is created. Panasonic heat pumps are available in both air-to-air, and air-to-water systems.

They can supply domestic hot water and space heating through an air conditioning system in both domestic and commercial settings. Scotland Heat Pumps are experts in Panasonic air source heat pumps and heat pump installation and Panasonic heat pump maintenance.

How do Panasonic Heat Pumps work?

  • The heat source is blown or pumped over the heat exchange system which is visible on the outside of the premises.
  • This heat, though cold by our standards is warm enough to cause the special refrigerant liquid to evaporate and turn into a gas.
  • The gas is put through a compressor which increases its pressure. This causes the temperature to rise. An example of this is when a bicycle pump warms up as it’s used. This is another example of compression.
  • The now heated gas is passed over the internal heating system. This is moved through the property through an air-system or the central heating and hot water system.
  • As the temperature of the gas falls the heat is transferred to the home/commercial property and returns to liquid.
  • The refrigerant returns to the outside heat exchange and the process begins once more.

How Much Does a Panasonic Heat Pump Cost?

Air source heat pumps can cost as little as £6,000, and round source heat pumps can cost as little as £9,000. Running costs vary, as with any central heating system it is dependent on the size of property and consumer usage.

Commercial Panasonic Heat Pumps

Panasonic have created some top of the range air to air commercial heat pumps. These are highly efficient, low energy systems which are committed to benefiting the environment.  What’s more, each system comes with special inverter compressors which optimise the efficiency and reduce running costs.

How to Reduce your Carbon Footprint with Panasonic Heat Pumps

A heat pump is a great way to reduce your company’s energy consumption. Of course, this system is run through electricity so there will be some energy used by the system, but by replacing the fuel your business currently uses with a renewable source will mean you will continue to only use a fraction of the energy you once used.

It’s likely your current heating system is inefficient, especially if it is over 10 years old. This means wasted energy and money. A brand new, innovative system will offer lower running costs thanks to the highly efficient nature of Panasonic Heat Pumps. This will benefit the planet, and also the environment.

Today working towards sustainability at the corporate level is very important. 86% of Guardian readers like buying products from companies that give something back to society and 84% think that companies should be penalised for failing to care for the environment.

It’s important that once your heat pump is installed it’s monitored properly; this will help reduce overall running costs and avoid wasted energy.

Commercial Panasonic heat pumps come with highly effective controls which allow for zone controls across your premises. This is a great way to reduce energy consumption.

Proper control of the thermostat will allow you to make savings. A useful tip is to set the temperature slightly lower, but have the heating system come on a few hours early. This will allow your workers to still feel comfortable but reduce wasted energy.

What types of Panasonic Commercial Heat Pumps are there?

Commercial single

For new installations and low consumption commercial properties.

Commercial PACi Twin, Triple and Double-Twin System

This is a green energy system which works with existing radiators in the premises.

Renewable Heat Incentive

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a UK Government scheme set up to encourage uptake of renewable heat technologies amongst householders, communities and businesses through quarterly monetary incentives.

This incentive was put in place to help home and business owners meet the government’s ambitious targets of 12% of heating coming from renewable sources by 2020. Installing a Panasonic air source heat pump is a great way to gain financial benefits and help the planet at the same time.

Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive

Under the UK Government’s domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme, you could receive quarterly cash payments over seven years if you install or have already installed an eligible renewable heating technology. Renewable heat generated by heat pumps is based on an estimate of the heat demand from an expert EPC combined with an estimate of the heat pump’s efficiency.

Please note:

  • Premises with a home office and can procure a domestic EPC will be eligible for the Domestic RHI.
  • Premises with one main house and a self-contained outbuilding which own their own separate EPCs, though both heated by one heat pump would not be eligible for the Domestic RHI.

The current tariff (valid until end September 2016) is:

  • 19.33p per kWh – Ground source heat pump
  • 7.51p per kWh – Air source heat pumps

Technologies supported by the RHI scheme:

  • Ground to water heat pumps
  • Air to water heat pumps

Please note: Panasonic air to air heat pumps are not covered by the RHI scheme.

To apply you will need

  • MCS installation certificate number for the heating system.

What Is the Difference Between Dimplex Ground and Air Source Heat Pumps?

If you are living in a climate which needs reasonable heating and cooling needs, a heat pump can offer an energy-efficient alternative to furnaces and air conditioners.

Much like a home refrigerator, Dimplex heat pumps use electricity to transfer heat from a cool space to a warm space, making the cool space cooler and the warm space warmer.

This is how heat pumps work during the heating season, as heat pumps move warmth from the cool outdoors into your warm house and during the cooling season heat pumps move heat from your cool house into the warm outdoors.

Heat pumps move heat rather than generate heat, therefore, heat pumps can provide equal space conditioning at as little as one quarter of the cost of operating conventional heating or cooling appliances.

There are three types of heat pumps:

Air-To-AirWater SourceGround Source

Dimplex Ground Source Heat Pumps

Dimplex ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) use pipes that are below the surface of the ground. These pipes extract heat from the ground. This heat can then be used to heat radiators, underfloor or warm air heating systems and hot water in your home.

Unlike gas and oil boilers, heat pumps deliver heat at lower temperatures over much longer periods. During the winter they may need to be on constantly to heat your home efficiently. You will also notice that radiators won’t feel as hot to the touch as they might do when you are using a gas or oil boiler.

A ground source heat pump mixes water and antifreeze around a loop of pipe which is buried in your garden. Heat from the ground is then absorbed into the fluid and is passed through a heat exchanger and then finally into the heat pump.

This type of heat pump can be used all year long as the ground stays at a fairly constant temperature under the surface. Depending on the size of your home the length of the ground loop may vary.

In some cases, a longer loop can draw more heat from the ground. If you choose a longer loop for your heat pump it will need more space to be buried in. If there is not enough space, a vertical borehole can be drilled instead.

The Benefits of Dimplex Ground Source Heat Pumps

  • Reduced fuel bills, particularly if you replace conventional electric heating
  • Heat pumps generate income through the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)
  • Lower home carbon emissions, depending on which fuel you are replacing
  • No fuel deliveries
  • Ground heat pumps heat your home as well as your water
  • Minimal maintenance required

Air Source Heat Pumps

One of the most used type of heat pump is the air source heat pump scotland. This heat pump transfers heat between your house and the outside air. Modern heat pumps have the ability to reduce electricity use for heating by approximately 50% compared to electric resistance heating such as furnaces and baseboard heaters. By investing in heat pumps that also have dehumidifying qualities this results in less energy usage and more cooling comfort in summer months.

This system is suitable for small flats to large detached houses and from an office block to a school. Not only are air source heat pumps reliable and sustainable form of heating technology but it also provides efficient space heating and hot water all year round.

Air source heat pumps work well in properties that have high levels of thermal efficiency. Heat Pump Scotland recommend undertaking basic improvements in existing properties such as cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, and double glazing, before installing a heat pump.

Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems, or warm air convectors and hot water in your home.

Air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air in the same way that a fridge extracts heat from its inside. Heat pumps can get heat from the air even when the temperature is as low as -15° C.

How do Air source heat pumps work?

Heat from the air is absorbed at low temperature into a fluid. This fluid then passes through a compressor where its temperature is increased and transfers its higher temperature heat to the heating and hot water circuits of the house. There are two main types of air source heat pump systems. An air-to-water system distributes heat via your wet central heating system.

Dimplex heat pumps work much more efficiently at a lower temperature than a standard boiler system would. This makes them more suitable for underfloor heating systems or larger radiators, which give out heat at lower temperatures over longer periods of time.
An air-to-air system produces warm air which is circulated by fans to heat your home. They are unlikely to provide you with hot water as well.

Will a Heat Pump System Work for Your Home or Business?

Do you have somewhere to put it? You’ll need a place outside your home where a unit can be fitted to a wall or placed on the ground. It will need plenty of space around it to get a good flow of air. A sunny wall is ideal.

Is your home well insulated? Since air source heat pumps work best when producing heat at a lower temperature than traditional boilers, it’s essential that your home is insulated and draught-proofed well for the heating system to be effective.

What fuel will you be replacing? The system will pay for itself much more quickly if it’s replacing an electricity or coal heating system. Heat pumps may not be the best option for homes using mains gas.

What type of heating system will you use? Air source heat pumps can perform better with underfloor heating systems or warm air heating than with radiator-based systems because of the lower water temperatures required.

Is the system intended for a new development? Combining the installation with other building work can reduce the cost of installing the system.

You may also want to consider ground source heat pumps, which use pipes buried in the garden to extract heat from the ground. We recommend using our Renewables Selector tool to find out which means of generating energy might work best for you.

Your heat distribution system

Many of us overestimate the power of our radiators. If possible it is recommended that you underfloor heating installed in your home as they can be much more efficient than radiators.

If your home or business does not have underfloor, it is advised that you use the largest radiators you can. At Scotland Heat Pumps we can recommend what system will be best for you.

Your fuel costs

Even though you have this type of heat pump installed you still have to pay fuel bills with a heat pump because it is powered by electricity, but you will save on the fuel you are replacing.

Your old heating system

If your old heating system was incompetent, you are more likely to see lower running costs with a new heat pump.

Water heating

If you purchase a Dimplex heat pump that provides hot water, then this could limit the overall efficiency. It may be worth your while to consider solar water heating which will provide hot water in the summer and help keep your heat pump efficiency up.

Using controls

Make sure that once your heat pump is installed that you get the most out of it. This is possible by setting the heating to come on for longer hours. It is possible for you to set the thermostat lower and still feel comfortable

Your installer should explain to you how to control the system so you can use it most effectively. These are the savings you might make every year when replacing an existing heating system in an average four-bedroom detached home with an average air source heat pump installation.

How a Mitsubishi Ecodan Heat Pump can reduce your Carbon Footprint

Energy is one of our greatest commodities that keeps Scotland’s economy ticking over, we use it for a plethora of applications; energy heats our homes, schools hospitals and fuels our businesses.

However, as we know by now with energy production comes toxic greenhouse gases, energy supply counts for approximately 30% of all greenhouse emissions which contributes to global warming and climate change.

Carbon dioxide is the most substantial greenhouse gas that is released by human activity, which comes from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas. Thankfully there are plans in place by the Scottish government to reduce these emissions and have 30% of Scottish energy consumption powered by renewable energy by 2020. Domestic heat pumps and commercial heat pumps are a great way to combat climate change.

Commercial Mitsubishi Air Source Heat Pumps

For businesses, Mitsubishi offers commercial-grade air source heat pumps that provide reliable and efficient heating and cooling. These systems are ideal for various commercial applications, from office buildings to industrial facilities. The commercial units are designed for high performance, with features that ensure consistent comfort while reducing energy costs.

Commercial Mitsubishi Air Source Heat Pumps

It’s is estimated that 40% of carbon emissions come from commercial heating and cooling, so it’s no wonder businesses are looking for new ways to heat their premises whilst also reaping long term benefits. One way companies can work to reduce Co2 emissions in Scotland is to harness one of the planet’s greatest carbon neutral sources available all around us through ground and air sourced energy.

A Mitsubishi Ecodan ground source heat pump acts in the same way a fridge does, it absorbs heat from the grown or water below then raises the temperature to be used in water heating or space heating.

Mistubishi Ecodan ground source heat pumps can provide water temperatures up to 65 degrees Celsius from ground and water temperatures from as low as -5 degrees Celsius.

The Mitsubishi Ecodan ground source heat pump is recommended for medium to large commercial premises. It can draw heat from places such as river water or waste processing which can then be transformed into usable heat.

Here at Scotland Heat Pumps, we are registered Ecodan installers and will provide your commercial heat pump expertly. The Ecodan uses heat pump technology to produce low-carbon heating and hot water. This system is award winning that is ideal as a replacement for traditional heating systems.

Benefits of Heatpumps - Mitsubishi Ecodan Ground Source Heat Pumps

  • Helps achieve renewable energy targets
  • Capable of reducing running costs and CO2 emissions
  • Easy to design, install and maintain
  • Fully scalable and can work independently or in conjunction with other systems
  • Optimised systems up to to 960kW
  • Little maintenance required.

Ground source heat pumps extract heat from the ground through pipes buried in the soil. The heat can be transferred to heat radiators and under-floor systems, water and hot air systems all from a completely natural source.

Although there is some electricity needed to run ground source heat pumps, meaning they have some environmental impact they are still much preferred to conventional heating systems as the energy they extract from the ground is constantly being renewed naturally. Did you know that for every 1kW of electricity fed into an Ecodan heat pump, you can produce up to 3kW of consumable energy? This makes the system highly efficient and can offer great savings when compared to traditional heating systems.

Commercial heat pumps are a wonderful innovation that can heat schools, office blocks and even communities. However, the greatest benefit of these systems is their entirely renewable nature which provides effective heating in Scotland with little damage to the environment.

Benefits of Heat pumps – Mitsubishi Ecodan Air Source Heat Pumps

  • Helps achieve renewable energy targets
  • Capable of reducing running costs and CO2 emissions
  • Easy to design, install and maintain
  • Fully scalable and can work independently or in conjunction with other systems
  • Optimised systems from 4kW to 688kW

Much like a typical ground source heat pump an Ecodan air source heat pump works in a similar way. The system absorbs cool air from its surroundings and raises it to a high enough temperature than be used to heat the premises or the water in the radiators and taps.

Ecodan air source heat pumps can provide water temperatures up to 60 degrees Celsius from outside temperatures as low as -25 degrees Celsius. This is a great benefit as our customers will know their systems can produce heat even in the most bitter of Scottish winters! We are expert Ecodan installers and our skilled team provide commercial heat pumps for all your corporate needs.

Non – Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive

The Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive Scotland (RHI) is a Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and Government approved scheme that provides financial incentives to promote the installations of renewable heat throughout The UK. Once your renewable heat system is installed your business will receive quarterly payments for every kilowatt hour produced for 20 years. After March 25th 2016 all heat pumps installed must meet a minimum performance standard and come with an EU energy label in order to be eligible for the RHI.

Savings from Commercial Scotland Heat Pumps

Not only will your business receive an income from the RHI, but great savings can be made on top of this. By installing a ground or air source heat pump your businesses energy bills will be reduced, although some electricity is still used as the system is powered by electricity you will save by replacing the current fuel your business uses with that obtained from natural, completely free, source.

Savings will also be made due to the efficiency of new heating systems. It is likely your current system is not heating your building to its full potential. You will have lower running costs thanks to the installation of an efficient system. Using your heating system correctly will not only benefit the planet, but your bank account too.

Proper control of the thermostat will allow you to make savings. A useful tip is to set the temperature slightly lower, but have the heating system come on a few hours early. This will allow your workers to still feel comfortable but reduce wasted energy.

Are Commercial Heat Pumps Efficient?

Heat pumps are especially efficient, providing huge savings if your company is heated by oil or LPG which is a further benefit of heat pumps.

  • Air Source Heat Pump – 290% efficiency
  • Ground Source Heat Pump – 320% efficiency
  • Oil – 87% efficiency
  • LPG -90% efficiency

Depending on the size and nature of your building, heat pump systems will very in cost but there is no doubt there are significant savings to be made as heat pumps deliver around 3 to 4 kWh of energy for every 1 kWh of electricity used to power it, which means they are 300 to 400% more efficient than electric heating. With all these benefits and the government targets for carbon emissions still a mile away, can businesses continue to be picky about their heating systems? Is it time your business caught on to this trend for 2016?

Under the UK Government’s domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme, you could receive quarterly cash payments over seven years if you install or have already installed an eligible renewable heating technology. Renewable heat generated by heat pumps is based on an estimate of the heat demand from an expert EPC combined with an estimate of the heat pump’s efficiency.

To apply you will need

  • MCS installation certificate number for the heating system
  • Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) number
  • Bank details

Scotland Heat Pumps are a fully accredited company who can provide you with the necessary documentation for attaining the Renewable Heat Incentive funds.

The current tariff (valid until end September 2016) is:

  • 19.33p per kWh – Ground source heat pump
  • 7.51p per kWh – Air source heat pumps
